Looking Into The Light: Creativity and Photography is a series of exercises and assignments that take photographers to a direct experience of their own creativity, then let them practice it in their work.
It comes from a workshop that Sean Kernan has developed over more than 30 years of exploring and teaching. Photography is a main vehicle for the work, but it's not the only one, and the point of all of them is greater awareness and seeing, from which photographs follow.
On this companion site to the book you can participate and:
Read about the book
Read some chapters
See galleries of photos from the exercises
Submit your own photos
Find workshops
There are nine curated galleries of photographs by workshop participants, readers, and the author, made in response to different assignments. You can see and learn from the sheer variety of responses, And you are invited to participate in an ongoing visual conversation by submitting your own responses for possible inclusion in the galleries.
Sean’s methods are very unlike other photo instructors, and it’s difficult to fully understand where his teachings lead you, until that is, you arrive at the creative destination. He is capable of sparking a revelation and making your eye brows raise & furrow in equal measure.

Kernan's voice is a much needed guide for photographers that want more than the scattershot approach to making images. Creativity and Photography challenges photography and its photographers to aspire to be something more. Garin Horner, Chair, Department of Art and Design, Adrian College
